Basic Description:
The
Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) is a fully-funded scholarship program
for international students to pursue PhD studies in Hong Kong. It is funded by
the Research Grants Council (RGC) of Hong Kong. The HKPFS aims to attract the
best and brightest students from all over the world to study in Hong Kong's
universities.
The
HKPFS 2024/25 will award 300 PhD fellowships to students who are seeking
admission as new full-time PhD students in the following eight universities in
Hong Kong:
- The
Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK)
- The
Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST)
- The
University of Hong Kong (HKU)
- The
City University of Hong Kong (CityU)
- The
Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU
- Lingnan
University (LU)
- The
Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK)
- The
Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU)
Eligibility Conditions:
To
be eligible for the HKPFS 2024/25, applicants must:
- Be
a citizen of any country other than Hong Kong.
- Be
seeking admission as a new full-time PhD student in one of the eight
participating universities.
- Have
a minimum of an upper second-class honours degree (or equivalent) in a
relevant subject.
- Demonstrate
outstanding qualities of academic performance, research ability /
potential, communication and interpersonal skills, and leadership
abilities.

Initial Application Form: This form must be completed online
and submitted by 1 December 2023.

Statement of Purpose: This is a personal statement that
should explain your reasons for wanting to pursue a PhD in Hong Kong, your
research interests, and your career goals.

Research Proposal: This is a detailed plan for your
proposed PhD research. It should include a literature review, a research
methodology, and a timeline for completion.
·
Transcripts: Official transcripts from all
universities you have attended.
·
Letters of Recommendation: Two letters of recommendation from
academic referees.
·
English Proficiency Certificate: If your prior education was not
conducted in English, you must provide an English proficiency certificate.
·
CV: A curriculum vitae that summarizes
your academic and professional experience.
How to Apply for the Scholarships Program?
Here
are the steps on how to apply for the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme 2024:
1. Check the
eligibility criteria. The Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme
is open to international students who are seeking admission as new full-time
PhD students in the following eight universities in Hong Kong:

2. Submit an initial
application through the Hong Kong PhD
Fellowship Scheme Electronic System (HKPFSES). The initial application deadline
is 1 December 2023 at 12:00 noon Hong Kong Time. You can find more information
about the initial application on the HKPFSES website.
3. Obtain an HKPFS
Reference Number.
Once you have submitted your initial application, you will be given an HKPFS
Reference Number. This number will be required when you submit your full
application to the universities.
4. Submit full
applications to the universities you have
chosen. The full application deadlines vary by university. You can find the
deadlines on the websites of the individual universities.
5. Wait for the
selection results. The selection results will be
announced in March 2024.
Benefits of the Scholarship Program:
The
HKPFS 2024/25 provides a number of benefits to successful applicants,
including:
- An
annual stipend of HK$331,200 (approximately US$42,460) for up to three
years.
- A
travel allowance of HK$13,800 (approximately US$1,760) per year for
conferences and research-related travels.
- The
host university will provide additional support if the PhD extends from 3
years.
- Access
to the RGC's research facilities and resources.
- The
opportunity to network with leading researchers in Hong Kong and around
the world.
